Who could have predicted that the type of person who identifies with a meme about being an awful person, when teamed with the type of person who could stand them in the first place, would be capable of a nasty, bitter public breakup?

This meme and its forefathers have always bothered the crap out of me. Isn't it saying I am an awful person DON'T JUDGE ME!? I'm sorry to get serious here, but this is how you get defenses of white supremacists on White House senior staffs, because NEO-NAZIS ARE PEOPLE TOO, GOD FORBID THEY BE REPRESENTED IN GOVERNMENT, YOU LIBERALS ARE ALL FOR TOLERANCE EXCEPT FOR TOLERATING PEOPLE WITH DIFFERENT BELIEFS, which I know you're gonna have trouble believing but I am not making that defense up. Isn't that what it's saying? I can be awful if I want and there shouldn't be any repercussions like people not liking it or me? Am I maybe overthinking this a little?

You are not overthinking it. Yes, the bottom line of this meme and memes of its ilk is: Excuse my unrepentant assholery, just because. Indeed, this is at the core of our current, uh, situation.

All that said, do I find it fascinating and kinda hilarious that a grammatically butchered minion meme has inspired both an actual breakup and a thoughtful, emotional socio-political commentary? Yes. Yes I do. Then again, I’m looking for humor in anything I can find these days.
